Brooklyn Arts Council seeks Gallery/Administrative Intern

Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), an arts service organization and presenter based in the dynamic DUMBO arts district and working throughout the borough - seeks a savvy and energetic intern.

The Gallery/Administrative Intern is the first point of contact for all visitors to Brooklyn Arts Council's office and provides general administrative support to the Executive Assistant to the President and BAC Visual Arts Director. The Gallery/Administrative Intern will also assist in the maintenance of the Artist Registry and Directory of Organizations, two membership-based online databases.

Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) was founded in 1966 and is the umbrella for Brooklyn’s range of cultural groups and individual artists working in the visual, performing, media, and literary arts. BAC helps Brooklyn’s artist population–from the experimental to those preserving and evolving traditions of cultural heritage–create and present their work. BAC ensures that thousands of people throughout Brooklyn have access to a variety of free arts programming each year. Our programs are essential to the livelihoods of thousands of artists, creative professionals, and arts organizations across the borough. Responsibilities:
  • Greet office visitors, answer phones
  • Data entry: assist in maintaining the organization's contact database and mailing lists
  • Monitor and report Artist Registry and Directory activity
  • BAC Gallery Support including maintaining data spreadsheets and contacting artists as well as other related duties, as necessary
  • Attend and assist with BAC Gallery openings, events and First Thursday programs
  • Assist with special Visual Arts projects
  • General administrative duties and programmatic support as needed, including filing, assisting with mailings, meeting room set-up and general office duties


Requirements:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Database experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized and detail oriented


Preferred Qualifications:

·        Interest in arts and/or knowledge of Brooklyn arts scene preferred

·        Bachelors degree or MFA degree candidate preferred

Description

Pacific Projects is currently accepting applications for a design
intern for fall 2011 to work on the Atlas of Art and Capital, a
publication on innovative models for art production. The intern will
join a small team of established designers involved with the project,
and will work closely with the publication’s editors, project manager,
and researchers to help transform research findings into compelling
data visualizations.

Responsibilities may include: brainstorming ways to visually render
research culled from archival sources; designing and executing
preliminary data visualizations to aid in the editorial process;
sitting in on and taking detailed notes at editorial and design staff
meetings; and other administrative duties, as needed.

The ideal candidate will be a talented designer with strong research
skills, and experience creating a variety of web design, print design
and info graphic/data visualization work. In addition, he/she will be
a motivated, detail-oriented visual problem-solver who works well
independently and on deadline. Candidates should be proficient in
Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. A bachelor’s degree in
fine arts or a related field is preferred.

A minimum time commitment of 3-5 hours a week is required. The intern
may work remotely or at Pacific’s offices in downtown Manhattan, but
will be required to attend periodic meetings at the Pacific offices.
This position is available immediately.

Learning opportunities

The design internship offers an opportunity to work with senior art
directors and project staff on a unique project that presents art
historical research graphically. The intern can expect to be
challenged creatively, and will gain first-hand experience developing
work for a full-color, large-format publication.
