Dia Art Foundation is seeking an experienced and self-motivated professional to fulfill the position of Curatorial Associate and to provide primary administrative support to Dia’s curator by maintaining general organization of curatorial department. The Curatorial Associate will report to Dia Art Foundation’s Curator.

Dia Art Foundation’s curatorial philosophy is centered on artists and the multidimensional execution of their visions through a support structure that provides excellence, scholarship, and creative freedom. In keeping with a three-decade-long history, Dia’s exhibitions and public programs are conceived in direct exchange and collaboration with artists. The Curatorial Associate represents Dia Art Foundation to the art community, in particular with curators, scholars, collectors, and dealers. The Curatorial Associate must demonstrate discretion, judgment, and intellectual curiosity.

Responsibilities include managing curator’s calendar and travel arrangements; maintaining routine correspondence, answering telephone and e-mail communication; and performing administrative tasks associated with curatorial affairs (e.g. photocopying, filing, preparing large mailings, processing invoices and expense reports, maintaining curatorial budgets, overseeing long-range production schedules for exhibitions and programs, compiling research material, and maintaining curatorial archives). The Curatorial Associate works closely with Dia’s Registrar, the Director of Publications & Special Programs, the Exhibition Manager and other staff on production and installation of exhibitions and long-term commissions, publications, performance series, and related public programs (e.g. Artists on Artists Lecture Series, Readings in Contemporary Poetry, and special public programs) designed to advance Dia’s mission.

In addition to providing primary administrative support to Dia’s curator, the Curatorial Associate position encompasses a wide range of duties including: organizing artist travel, accommodation, and itinerary for artists; attending monthly curatorial meetings and institutional meetings as required; supervising Curatorial Interns (e.g. allocate weekly duties, overall responsibilities, and conduct final performance evaluation); replying to research queries, artist submissions, exhibition proposals, and requests for recordings of lectures, etc.; coordinating outside researchers’ use of Dia’s library and archive with assistance from Curatorial Interns; maintaining and updating Master Exhibition Schedule; drafting and executing exhibition, artists’, and speakers’ contracts; working with Curator, Registrar, and the Manager of Exhibitions in preparing accurate budgets for commissions, exhibitions, and public programs; communicating with artist regarding project development, travel, scheduling, public programs, and related events; providing information from Curatorial Department for printed materials, calendars, website, digital invitations, checklists, gallery laminates, and brochures according to Publications Department schedule; and writing copy on commission and exhibitions for press releases and website.

This is a full-time position based at Dia Art Foundation offices in New York City. Working hours will be 40 hours per week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and occasional weekends required. The Curatorial Associate reports to the Curator of Dia Art Foundation. Qualifications: B.A. Degree, art history strongly preferred and two to four years museum experience. Knowledge of or interest in contemporary art highly desired. Experience in accounting and/or bookkeeping necessary. The ideal candidate must demonstrate initiative and ability to work independently, excellent oral and written communication skills, scheduling abilities, presentation skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and Outlook. FileMaker training is a plus. The candidate must be fluent or knowledgeable in digital technologies including social media and presentation software. Must be highly organized, detail oriented, enjoy a fast-paced interactive work environment, and have a sense of anticipation about the curatorial process. The candidate must be fluent or knowledgeable of contemporary art with particular emphasis on artists in Dia’s collection and exhibition history. Ability to organize, conceptualize, and direct a variety of projects simultaneously is essential.

Dia Art Foundation is expanding its arts education and public engagement initiatives at Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, and is seeking an experienced museum education professional to fulfill the position of Arts Education Associate and implement new school and teacher programs. Building on the current Arts Education programs in New York City and Beacon, the Arts Education Associate will create new learning opportunities around Dia’s collection and oversee and manage school and teacher programs, internships, and community outreach initiatives. The Arts Education Associate will report to Dia Art Foundation’s Curator and the Managing Director of Dia:Beacon and will work closely with the Senior Arts Education Associate in New York City.

Dia Art Foundation’s education philosophy grows out of a belief that children should be exposed to artworks in conjunction with a radical approach to teaching that engages unconventional methodologies aimed at engendering and sustaining creative freedom and diversity in opinions. Dia encourages interdisciplinary exploration in Dia:Beacon’s Riggio Galleries while presenting the exceptional opportunity to consider questions of visual literacy and its relationship to the natural and social sciences, mathematics, and the humanities. In keeping with the innovative works in the collection, Dia’s Arts Education Programs foster rigorous, inquiry-based observations and associative thinking while providing tools for critical engagement and direct exchange.

The Arts Education Associate represents Dia Art Foundation in the Beacon community, in particular with elementary, middle school, and high school principals and teachers. The Arts Education Associate must develop strong relationships with the learning community in the Hudson Valley, attend meetings at schools, and implement innovative education initiatives in response to Dia’s goals and priorities. The Arts Education Associate position encompasses a wide range of duties including: the development of thematic tours, specifically to elementary, middle, and high school groups based on Dia’s collection; monthly training of guides, teaching artists, gallery attendants, and staff associated with the implementation of school tours (thematic guided tours); school partnerships (with 6 Beacon City Schools); teacher development programs; family programs (Community Free Days); and an internship program. The position supervises part-time guides; part-time teaching artists; and part-time college-level interns.

Qualifications:

M.A. in art history, museum studies, art education or related field. Minimum of 5 years of modern or contemporary museum experience in museum education or educational institution. Must demonstrate success in developing, implementing, and sustaining innovative education initiatives and working with students, youth, and teachers and the general public is essential. Must possess strong writing skills, and have the ability to communicate regarding major developments of 20th and 21st century art. Must have knowledge of critical, pedagogical, and related theories; a strong commitment to work with diverse populations; and experience supervising guides, volunteers, and interns; and strong budget and administrative skills. The individual must be well organized, and have excellent planning and implementation skills with a high level of professionalism and commitment to the mission of Dia Art Foundation. The Arts Education Associate must have strong communication skills and be experienced and comfortable with public speaking. The candidate must be fluent or knowledgeable in digital technologies including social media and presentation software. Experience in audio-visual skills including production/editing of simple audio and video content is also desired. Frequent local travel is required and reliable transportation is necessary.

Dia Art Foundation’s Curatorial Department seeks motivated and highly-organized applicants for six-month a Curatorial Internship (volunteer). Ideal candidates would hold a graduate-level degree in art history, preferably with a focus in contemporary art, and demonstrate exceptional research skills as well as a strong interest in curatorial practice.

The Curatorial Intern’s primary responsibilities include conducting extensive, in-depth research associated with Dia’s collection, exhibitions, and programs, and maintaining Dia’s library, curatorial department artists’ files, and exhibition archive, as well as handling curatorial correspondence. The hours of this unpaid position are a minimum of 2-3 days per week, 10am-6pm.

Dia Art Foundation seeks an intern in the Public Affairs Department for the months of June, July and August. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in nonprofit management specifically related to digital and on-site communications, audience building, brand awareness, and exhibition, program and event promotion. Undergraduates and graduates interested in pursuing a career in the fields of visual arts administration, museum studies, arts marketing, or media and public relations are encouraged to apply.

The Public Affairs Intern will assist with regular departmental activities that range from database management and market research to social media site updates, content development, and general administrative tasks. Applicants must possess excellent organizational, writing and interpersonal skills as well as a careful attention to detail and the ability to work well independently. Knowledge of social media platforms, modern and contemporary art, and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Raiser’s Edge is preferred.

Internships require a commitment of 16 hours per week and can qualify for school credit. The Public Affairs Intern receives a monthly MetroCard stipend and is eligible for regular Dia employee discounts, free admission to many New York City museums, and invitations to Dia programs, events and exhibition openings for the length of their internship.
